Spanish registered jobless exceeds 5 million people

Unemployment goes on growing everywhere as hiring falls

According to the Spanish Social Security (SS), there are 5,040,222 people out of work. More than 100,000 of them registered last February and it caused the reach of the border of 5 million unemployed for the first time ever. It should be kept in mind the fact that the SS datum always signs fewer rates of jobless than the official EPA (which proofs almost 6 million people out of work).

In February, the worst results are from agriculture and tertiary sector (the second one with 2/3 of the unemployed). It can be surprising that the building industry jobless doesn’t grow as other sectors do, but it could be explained because it was the first sector to fall after the outbreak of real state bubble, and it had abruptly fallen months ago. Nowadays there are 800.000 workers of that industry registered in SS as out of work.

Almost everywhere (except in the Balearic Islands) unemployment rose last month, especially in Andalucía (+2%) and Castille and Leon (1.8%). In absolute terms, Madrid and Andalucía experienced the biggest increase.

As jobless rose in February, hiring fell. Indefinite contracts dropped 9% and temporary hiring had a decrease of 14%. Spanish Government tried to hide attention from the increase of jobless saying that in the last month there was a “slowdown in the pace of increase in unemployment”.

French jobless also rise

This week it has also been revealed that France has its unemployment rate in 10%. It supposes the worst datum since the 1995-1999 crisis, when there was more than 11% of people out of work. Youth jobless also increased and it’s now over 25%.
